In an emotional announcement at Monday night’s City Council meeting, Councilman Paul Pomeroy stated that he will not seek re-election in April 2011. Pomeroy is councilman of Newark’s 1st District and has served on the council since April 2005.

Stating that he needed more time to devote to his job as a Marketing Director at Aloysius, Butler & Clark in Wilmington, and did not want to miss any more time with his young family, calling them “without a doubt, the most important thing in my life.” His wife Catherine and his children were in the audience as the statement was made.

The councilman thanked the residents of the 1st District for their support and said that it was “a true pleasure to serve on the Council.” Coucilmen Temko, Athey, Clifton, Tuttle, and Markham all thanked Pomeroy for his boundless energy and the creative ideas he imparted to the council.

Pomeroy stated that the timing of his announcement would allow any interested candidates ample time to prepare for their campaigns. He also stated that he has not “anointed” any successors.

Although Paul was not our councilman (West Branch), he was always great to keep us posted on any city news and also to help out in any way he could to promote the well being of the city and the neighborhoods.  It will be hard to find a replacement for the council that will be the dedicated hard worker that Paul was.
