Let it Snow Contest Winners
February 2010
Below are the winning entries for our First Annual West Branch "Let it Snow" contest. From the entries it is very apparent that we have some very talented children in West Branch and also seems they enjoyed the snow more than the majority of the adult residents,

Just last week two great blizzards hit our neighborhood. Almost 3 feet of snow covered the ground. School was canceled for everyone for a whole week. Even my parents didn't have to work for several days. Everyone gaped at the tremendously high piles of snow along the roads and driveways. Some piles were taller than our mailbox. Nothing was more amazing! My whole family went sledding; even the adults had some fun. Sometimes, though, adults and children think differently about snow days. Many kids enjoy playing in the snow. They can imagine themselves as a sled sliding down a hill or a snowflake flying in the air. Sometimes the girls are trees going to a winter ball in a snowy white gown. Boys (and even some girls) who pretend they're knights, can picture an icicle as a sword, saving a kingdom of ice castles from a terrible monster. Or course, all children can think of themselves as gusts of wind blowing snow anywhere they want. Unlike most kids, adults prefer to stay inside, especially after shoveling the driveway. They might want to be a couch potato all day, or a bear hibernating in its lair. They could wish that they were standing over a heating vent and staying really warm. Since they wash clothes very often, they can picture themselves as a pair of pants in the dryer. I'm sure they wish that they were still in bed with a warm blanket on top of them. So, even though every kid in your class likes snow days, remember your parents might hate them. For every kid playing outside catching snowflakes on their tongue or defending their fort with snowballs, there is an adult sitting inside with a hot cup of tea, watching TV and hoping school will be open tomorrow. I am a kid, not an adult, so I had lots of fun. I hope you had a very happy week off!

MY SNOWSTORM ADVENTURE BY: MELLIE WAY |
|
It all started on a chilly winter night ... I was in my room reading. Wait. Actually, I was at school. On went the intercom telling us that there would be an early dismissal. On that wonderful Friday, our last class was E.L.A. It was the most fun class in the entire universe! We had an oral journal share! Instead of talking about school, let us talk about when I got home ... when I got home, I finished any homework of mine. (Just joking) Actually, I saved it until the last minute to do my homework. (This was on Wednesday). But enough about homework ... let's talk about the snow and how it was so nice of letting us not have school. "WHOO-HOO!" I exclaimed in my head, trying not to disturb anyone. We don't have school! I silently whispered, for it was 6 o'clock in the morning. I had woken up early thinking that we had school and couldn't fall asleep again. It was a Monday and everyone else was asleep. Hearing that we had no school today, I started toward my brother's and sister's rooms so I could wake them up so I would actually have someone to play with. Wait, should I really wake them up? It would be mean, I think. I decided to not wake them up at 6 and wait until they woke up. I sped down the steps over to the TV room and began to watch TV. SpongeBob was on. It was the one where it snows in Bikini Bottom and Sandy is in hibernation. It was a funny one, so I watched it fully. After those two long hours of watching TV, somebody woke up. It was my brother, Jacob. We played on the computer until my Mom and Dad woke up. Then we asked if we could go outside. When they woke up, they told us to get breakfast and then we could go outside. (Which we soon did). Jacob and I plunged into the white blankness of the snow and soon we had frozen our toes off. (Not literally). We got inside feeling a sort of energy feeling, like when you've done something wonderful. Which of course, we did. We had made the most wonderful fort. We made it out of snow. You could walk around in it, and even sleep in there! After the long day, I had put together a small poem, and here is how it goes: |
|
Snowstorm, snowstorm Come to me Bring me a holiday And bring me glee I hope to say I love you But I know it is your special day For when you come to visit I know you're here to stay |
